Chronic abdominal pain (CAP) in children is defined as ongoing or recurring pain that lasts for three months or longer. It commonly leads to pediatric visits and can be difficult for families to handle. While many cases are functional, meaning there is no clear underlying disease and it relates to gut-brain sensitivity, some CAP can indicate a serious surgical condition.

As pediatric surgeons, our job is to rule out or diagnose surgical causes of CAP. This important investigation includes a thorough physical exam, a detailed history, and selective diagnostic tests like blood work, ultrasounds, or CT scans. We look for conditions such as chronic appendicitis, gallbladder problems, adhesions from past surgeries, specific gastrointestinal disorders, or certain abdominal masses. Once we identify a surgical cause, we provide tailored treatment, which often involves a minimally invasive procedure. If we determine the pain is functional, we work with your child's pediatrician and specialists to ensure effective, non-surgical management.
