Cryptorchidism, or undescended testis, is a common condition where one or both testicles have not dropped down into the scrotum. This is often noticed at birth or during a routine check-up. Many cases resolve on their own within the first few months of life. However, a testicle that remains undescended after six months typically needs surgery.
If untreated, an undescended testis can increase future fertility problems and slightly raise the risk of testicular cancer. The standard treatment is an operation called orchidopexy.
This procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. It involves locating the testis and moving it into the scrotum, where it is secured in a pocket. Early surgical correction, ideally performed between 6 and 18 months of age, is essential for maximizing the chance of normal testicular function.
